Let’s start with the wall closet – the most common type of bedroom closet.
Also known as a reach-in closet, you want to have enough space to give clothing on hangers at least a couple of inches in both front and back to hang freely. This requires a minimum depth of 24 inches within the interior walls. And chances are you desire more than just one rod to hang things.
The trend in today’s closets is transitional design that makes all types of clothing and accessories easily accessible. Here are the characteristics every good wall closet should have…
- Spaces to hang both long and short hanging items
- Several open shelves with varying heights
- An area for shoes
- Space to hang ties, belts, handkerchiefs and scarves
Although optional, it’s great to have a bank of drawers – but this depends on how wide the closet is. For wall closets with two or more doors, the interior width should be at least 60 inches. One door closets may be too narrow because the return walls (the short section of a wall extending from the door opening to the side walls) should be no longer than 12 inches.
